Reflections on traveling

I've recently been lucky enough to visit Thailand, meet up with friends from undergrad, celebrate a close friend's wedding, and enjoy some quality R&R time.  And I realize that there is something so beautiful about traveling.

Prior to leaving, you may see from my previous posts that I reflect (a lot.) about life and experiences and people and all the things that pop into my heart or head.  Part of what I was feeling more and more strongly before I left was a growing sense of remorse about finding Love.  I know it's a little cliche, but it has been a long time since I really Loved someone.  I try not to be hung up over things you can't control and instead to make the most out of life as it is, but I couldn't help feeling a little depleted about it all.

When I arrived in Thailand and swam with my friend I looked around.  There was so much there that spoke to my heart, that gave my spirit a refreshing kiss, and that transported me to a place where being present and experiencing what was in front of me was the obvious and natural thing to do.  Travel has a way of reminding you that there's no point in sweating the small stuff - sweating the small stuff crowds out the space in your life for fresh experiences, beauty and joy.

One other reflection I've had is how important it is to let things go. It's easy to get worked up, upset, or grumpy when things don't feel or go exactly your way.  And whether it's in your career, friendships, or a romantic relationship the act of letting something go (i.e., not picking every fight or letting someone have it their way) can be the biggest favor you do for yourself.  It enables you to grow into a skin where you can adapt to the ups and downs life throws at you.

I'd like to try to keep all this in mind even when I go back home and make an effort to appreciate the here and now.

Want more love for your soul?

Here's a quote from a weekly astrologer that I really enjoy, Rob Brezsny

"The world is young, your soul is free, and you're smart enough to fall in love with every experience you have."
